The August 2009 Vanity Fair has an out-on-a-limb, fascinating, 1930′s style tribute featuring tons of movie stars sporting vintage looks. It also includes the vintage photos the looks were based on, for comparison. Some of them are quite striking, like Mila Kunis portraying Joan Crawford in the photo above. Who knew? And I also liked James Marsden and Rose Byrne portraying Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in 1934′s It Happened One Night. (photo below). But I thought their take on They Shoot Horses, Don’t They was a bit over-the-top.

here’s more:

Ain’t We Got Style?

The 1930s had style as well as breadlines. So let’s see My Man Godfrey wearing Armani, deck the Joads out in Burberry and Bottega Veneta, and pretend that It Happened One Night in Ralph Lauren. With an homage to Hollywood, Hard Times Edition, Michael Roberts, Norman Jean Roy, Mark Seliger, and Art Streiber photograph a bevy of this summer’s stars—costumed by Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Givenchy, Galliano, and others—in cinematic moments from seven Depression classics. We’ve added stills from the original movies for fun. Plus: Outtakes and behind-the-scenes photos from the shoots. See the whole tribute in Vanity Fair here.
